Many of our “life lessons” seem to happen to us in the rodeo arena!
My son, Brian, and his dad, Jack have decided to try a different rodeo
event than what they had been competing in. They decided to “steer
rope”.
Steer roping has been
around for many years with it’s history of use on the working ranch. We
knew from calf roping
that we needed an experienced horse to help train us! We were able to
get a 20 year old named “Coffee”. He is well seasoned (meaning he’s
performed this event many times over his years of age)and is trustworthy
and has stability. The horse knows more about this event than the
cowboys!
It took many “ingredients” in order for us to get to our end goal
of steer roping. First of all, we asked an experienced roper - Shane
Suggs - for his help in purchasing the right horse. Having trained calf
ropers in the past, we knew that we needed an honest horse - a horse
that would always go out and do what he is suppose to compared to a
young horse that could be counterfeit because of the lack of performing
runs. This helps the cowboy to have time to learn the event for himself
and not have to worry about training a horse at the same time.
We needed the correct saddle, proper ropes, proper tying strings
and some roping steers to get started. We even had to widen the width of
the arena we have because more room was necessary for this event.
It took many changes - or ingredients - for us to come into this
new event. Sometimes it’s that same way with God. It will require you to
attain some new ingredients in your life to have a relationship with
Him. First of all - you have to decide that you want a
relationship with Him and ask Him into your heart and to forgive
you of your sins. Next, it would really help you to have a Bible
so you could get to know Him better. Then, spending some of your time
talking to Him would bring you even closer to knowing Him. All God
really wants is you! Just a few ingredients and you’ll have a life time
of recipes!
Coffee is our seasoned horse, but we’re also in the process of
training a younger and faster horse named CD. In steer roping, it is
critical for a horse to listen to the voice commands of his master
trainer. The horse must stop when he is told to because the roper will
have dismounted off of the horse by that time and the horse must be able
to speed up on his own with a voice command. This allows the roper to
go down the rope with the horse turned away from him and tie the steers
legs in this timed event.
Psalms 29:4 tells us that “The voice of the Lord is powerful,
the voice of the Lord is majestic.” Then, in verse 11, it goes on to
say “The Lord will give strength to His people, the Lord will bless
His people with peace.”
Have you heard the voice of the Lord in the decisions you
are making every day? If you desire strength, peace, love, guidance and
goodness in your life - isn’t it time to trust Him? Don’t live another
minute with out His voice! Ask him today - then you will have all
the ingredients you need to live a full life!
